Back In Style
The front of the sleeve to this 1975 album is misleading in that it only shows three members of the Crickets, a shame really because photographs of the other lead singers Earl Sinks and David Box are quite rare.
The first recordings made by The Crickets without Buddy Holly are featured on this album "Love's made a Fool Of You" and "Someone, Someone", the guitarist on this session was Sonny Curtis who later went on to achieve success in a solo career as a singer, guitarist and songwriter. Sonny had been a member of the Crickets back in 1956 before fame had found the Texans.
When Buddy Holly died The Crickets left Norman Petty and went to record in New York, there first effort was "When You Ask About Love" and "Deborah". I can still remember going down to my local record store and buying this single (40 years ago!).
Several more tracks were recorded at the same sessions including "I Fought the Law" which was later covered with much success by The Bobby Fuller Four, these tracks proved that the songwriting of Curtis and drummer Jerry Allison was major league stuff. The last two tracks on side 2 are the only tracks recorded with the singer David Box who coincidentally died in a light aircraft crash some years later.
