The Very Best Of
Buddy Holly And The Picks

This CD is an extensive project started by the Picks in 1984 to inject there particular brand of backing vocals to Buddy's mostly mono recordings.
When Bill and John Pickering with Bob Lapham were hired by Norman Petty on a "career enhancement basis" (no money) to supply the backing vocals for a number of Buddy Holly and the Crickets recordings in 1957 they immediately stamped their unique style of almost barber shop harmonies to compliment Holly's more gentle delivery of Rock'n'Roll. On the long weekend of October 12, 13 and 14 they drove the 700 miles to Clovis, New Mexico to complete their work for "The Chirping Crickets", the only album by The Crickets made while Buddy Holly was alive. They were not even credited until 1987 when their names were finally put on U.S. released albums. In 1958 John Pickering entered Military service for the Army Corps Of Engineers in Washington D.C. and the 1700 miles between there and Clovis made it impossible for the group to provide any further harmonies for Buddy. John went on to become a Petroleum Geologist, and still works in the oil business today. In 1958 the Crickets recordings were backed by The Roses.
