Buddy Holly and the Crickets were now a national success, appearing on "The Ed Sullivan Show", a networked variety show which attained record breaking viewing figures weekly. In the meantime it had been decided that Buddy's solo career would be handled by Coral Records whilst Buddy Holly and the Crickets recordings would be distributed by Brunswick records, a subsidiary of Coral. When Buddy arrived at Coral Records he met Maria Elena Santiaga who was working there as a secretary. It was love at first sight for Buddy and he told Maria on their first date that he was going to marry her.
