Buddy Holly
Once again The Picks have arrived into my collection without an acknowledgment that they are present on these recordings. I suspect that this is not an "official" release as there is no label name on the CD and no manufacturer's name either on the CD or the accompanying art work. The tracks are made up of The Picks 1984 onwards overdub sessions that added backing vocal tracks to the original Buddy Holly recordings made at various locations. The "Apartment Tapes" are represented by "Learning The Game" and "Love Is Strange" with vocals added to the later Norman Petty overdub. After Buddy had signed a recording contract with Coral, Petty came up with the idea that The Crickets tracks would have vocal backing and Buddy Holly tracks would have none. Only when Buddy recorded "Rave On" and "Early In The Morning" in New York under musical directors other than Petty was this "rule" broken.
The Picks were never credited on the Crickets hits and it was a common mistake held by the record buying public that the group supplied their own vocal backing. This was an injustice that was corrected by the owners of Buddy's work allowing The Picks to overdub most of the recordings that were suitable for this excersise and announcing to the world that it was "Buddy Holly and the Picks" on the artwork that came with the recordings.
