That'll
Be The Day album was an opportunist release by the U.S. Decca label to
cash in on The Crickets' successful later version of the single recorded
at the Norman Petty Studios in Clovis, New Mexico and released by Coral.
The album consisted of Buddy's recordings made at the Owen Bradley Studio
in Nashville,Tennessee.
Buddy's first session at Bradley's Barn on January 26th 1956 consisted
of four tracks, "Midnight Shift", "Don't Come
Back Knockin'","Love Me" and
"Blue
Days, Black Nights". A couple of months passed
by before Decca released Buddy's first single on April 16th, "Blue
Days, Black Nights"/ "Love Me" sold fairly
well and was even released in the U.K. but not even the presence of the
great Grady Martin
who played rhythm guitar on the session, to let Buddy concentrate on his
vocals, could make this release a commercial success.
Later that year, on July 22nd, Buddy went back to Nashville, this time
taking Jerry Allison,
to record an early version of "That'll Be
The Day", "Rock
Around With Ollie Vee" and "Ting-a-Ling"
the latter two of these tracks were considered to be Holly's best work
so far. Buddy and Jerry really liked "That'll
Be The Day" but nobody else did!
A
final session in November 1956 produced a re-recording of "Rock
Around With Ollie Vee"and two new recordings
,"Modern Don Juan"/"You Are My One Desire"
which were released as a single for Christmas. These recordings featured
session musiscians Boots Randolph on
saxophone and Grady Martin
this time playing lead guitar.
Somewhere in these sessions Buddy also recorded "Girl
On My Mind" a song written by Bassist Don
Guess and the self penned "I'm
Changing All Those Changes"
Paul Cohen, head of Decca, Nashville said of Holly "He's the biggest no
talent I have ever worked with", not much later Decca dropped Buddy.
Discouraged
but not beaten,within weeks of this final session Buddy was making plans
to go to Clovis, New Mexico to see if Norman Petty could bring success!
